Effect of Supplemental Oxygen versus Dobutamine Administration on Liver Oxygen Tension in dPP-Guided Normovolemic Pigs

<i>Background:</i> Difference in pulse pressure (dPP) confirms adequate intravascular filling as a prerequisite for tissue perfusion. We hypothesized that both oxygen and dobutamine increase liver tissue oxygen tension (pt<i>O</i><sub>2</sub>). <i>Methods:</i> Eight anesthetized pigs received dPP-guided fluid management. Dosimetric feasibility study for an extracorporeal BNCT application on liver metastases at the TRIGA Mainz

This study investigates the dosimetric feasibility of Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT) of explanted livers in the thermal column of the research reactor in Mainz. The Monte Carlo code MCNP5 is used to calculate the biologically weighted dose for different ratios of the (10)B-concentration in tumour to normal liver tissue. The simulation results show that dosimetric goals are only partially met. To guarantee effective BNCT treatment the organ has to be better shielded from all gamma radiation.

The typical primary malignancies of the liver are hepatocellular carcinoma and cholangiocarcinoma, whereas colorectal liver metastases are the most frequently occurring secondary tumors. In many cases, only palliative treatment is possible. Boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) represents a technique that potentially destroys tumor tissue selectively by use of externally induced, locally confined secondary particle irradiation. Three cases of neonatal herpes simplex virus infection presenting as fulminant hepatitis

We report three cases of neonatal herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection presenting as fulminant hepatitis. None of the patients had clear risk factors for HSV infection and they all died. Antiviral treatment for HSV is currently available but must be administered early in the course of the disease before irreversible liver tissue damage is present. Since the diagnosis may be difficult to establish, we wish to draw the attention of clinicians to the presentation of neonatal HSV infection and suggest that in such cases viral cultures, including culture of liver tissue, should be obtained early and antiviral treatment administered while awaiting the culture results.

In situ hybridization of dihydroxyacetone phosphate acyltransferase, the regulating enzyme involved in plasmalogen biosynthesis

International audience; In situ hybridization can be carried out using different methods. The experimenter has to choose various parameters: the type of tissue fixation, the time of incubation, and the duration of the exposure time. All these parameters are determinant for the sensitivity and the resolution of this technique. This publication of technical aspects described different experiments performed for in situ hybridization on liver tissue. We may conclude on the parameters to optimize each step of the hybridization procedure. Moreover, this technique could be transposed to the brain and applied to little structures with a light expression of DHAP-AT.
